After 1,500 Days In The Shelter She’s Losing Hope That She’ll Ever Leave

Shyla came to the Humane Society of Naples in 2020 after being found wandering the streets by herself. She was very nervous around new people and needed plenty of time to feel safe and comfortable. Despite this, her rescuers were hopeful that she would find a loving home soon.
Sadly, that home never came, and now Shyla has been waiting for her forever family for over 1,500 days. Once she gets used to someone, she’s full of energy, playful, and a bit silly. However, all those years in the shelter have really affected her.
“Her personality is still the same, but you can see that the shelter has affected her,” said Patrizia Vila, events and outreach coordinator at Humane Society of Naples. “She usually sleeps in the morning and doesn’t react much when the staff arrives. The best moments for her are when we wake her up, play with her in the yard, or take her for a run to get a pup cup. Even on her good days, there’s a sadness in her eyes because she can’t spend more time with the people she loves.”
Shyla’s friends at the shelter have worked hard to find her a home, but her shyness around new people makes it difficult.
“Shyla may need a few meetings to feel comfortable with someone, and many people aren’t willing to meet with a dog several times before deciding to adopt,” Vila explained.
Shyla’s rescuers are doing their best to make her time at the shelter comfortable, but what she really needs is a forever home. She can live with another dog but would prefer a home without young children. Shyla will need a family that is patient as she adjusts to them. Most of all, she just wants love.
“Her dream is to watch movies with someone on the couch or bed and fall asleep next to them,” Vila said.
