Pemberton was more than just a chemist; he was also a Confederate colonel during the Civil War. After getting hurt in the war, he got hooked on morphine, a painkiller. So, he decided to create something to replace it. He tested out different formulas until he found one that worked.

After lots of experiments, he made a drink called French Wine Coca, which had a bit of alcohol in it. He named it after the main ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts, which have cocaine and caffeine in them.

He registered this wine in 1885, but in 1886, there were many protests against alcohol. Pemberton got worried about his product being banned, so he created Coca-Cola, a drink without alcohol.

The next year, Pemberton passed away. Asa Candler then bought the shares of the other shareholders in the company. By 1891, Asa Candler had full control of the business. After buying the company, he started his own company, called The Coca-Cola Company, the next year.
