Diver Comes Face To Face With A Crocodile
Let me share my amazing journey exploring Banco Chinchorro in Mexico! This unique place is special because it has the largest atoll reef in the Northern Hemisphere and is recognized as a Biosphere Reserve. Banco Chinchorro is situated about 22 miles off the coast of Quintana Roo.
During lobster season, a small community of fishermen makes Banco Chinchorro their home. It’s amazing to see how humans and nature come together in this area! The most incredible part is that this atoll is home to the highest concentration of American crocodiles in the world. Can you believe it?
These purebred crocodiles have made the lagoon on the main island their safe haven. What’s even more surprising is that the fishermen build their stilt houses right next to where the crocodiles live! That’s living on the edge! Seeing these powerful crocodiles up close in their natural habitat is truly awe-inspiring.
The peaceful coexistence between humans and crocodiles is fascinating, but it’s important to remember that these reptiles are natural predators! If given the chance, they would return to their hunting instincts in an instant. The central island is the main home for the crocodiles, and they sometimes swim into the waters around the fishermen’s houses.
Although adult humans aren’t seen as convenient prey compared to smaller animals, caution is essential. If they have the opportunity, they wouldn’t hesitate to take a larger meal! When navigating the waters with crocodiles, it’s important to be careful. To stay safe, position yourself at or below their level so they can see you clearly.
You need to watch their every move closely because, even if things seem calm, the crocodiles are always ready to decide when to strike. Swimming with them requires your full attention at all times to maintain a safe balance between humans and these predators. What an adventure it is!
