A Champ Gymnast From California With Down Syndrome Converts To A Model And Breaks Stereotypes
Everything and everyone is beautiful. Beauty is all around us, but not everyone sees it. Sometimes, when we watch certain modeling shows on TV, we think that only perfect-looking people belong in that world. Thankfully, a girl has shattered this perception and made a name for herself in the modeling industry with her unique style. She is Chelsea Werner, a gymnast from Danville, California, who has Down syndrome, a condition that can affect cognitive ability and physical growth.
Chelsea Werner is a remarkable gymnast. She has won the Special Olympics United States National Championship four times and earned the World Championship title twice. She started gymnastics at just 4 years old, which brought hope and confidence into her life.
Many people strive to achieve their goals but often forget the importance of self-confidence. Chelsea, however, is sure of her abilities and skills. It wasn’t easy for her to reach her goals because the fashion industry often seemed to have no place for people with Down syndrome. Nevertheless, with the support of her family, she kept trying and eventually made her mark in the market.
Chelsea Werner’s patience and persistence paid off when she was discovered by We Speak, a modeling agency that found her on social media. “I saw her viral videos and was immediately captivated by her beautiful, bubbly energy,” said Briauna Mariah, founder of We Speak, in an interview with A Plus. “I saw Chelsea’s potential to thrive in this industry and immediately reached out. It’s important women feel represented in the industry.”
From her very first photoshoot, Chelsea made a positive impression. Many followers praised her abilities.
“I just think you’re so incredible! I absolutely adore following your page and all your words of wisdom! Thank you for being YOU and sharing your talents and beauty with the world,” one person commented on a photo.
“So glad you shared this today! Keep inspiring people,” wrote another.
Chelsea has shown that success comes from preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. She taught us that with determination, it is possible to overcome challenges and rise above them.
“Chelsea takes feedback really well and learns quickly,” said Mariah. “Right now, we’re helping her gain experience in front of the camera and building her portfolio and brand. The next step is to have her participate in Fall/Winter ’18 fashion week in NYC. We’re setting up interviews, meetings, and castings for her time there.”
Werner joins other models with the same disorder, like Maran Avila and Madeline Stuart, in promoting inclusion in the fashion industry. Madeline Stuart has even launched her own clothing line called 21 Reasons Why, named after her 21st chromosome.
In a world that often praises perfection, these three stars show that there’s no single definition of “perfect.”
Everyone is beautiful in their own way!
