Firefighters change girl’s life after she pays their bill
First responders have one of the hardest jobs out there. Their dedication and hard work are invaluable, and we owe them our gratitude.
After spending over 12 hours fighting a massive warehouse fire in North Brunswick, New Jersey, firefighters Paul Hulling and Tim Young needed a break. They stopped at Route 130 Diner to grab a bite and talk about their day. Liz Woodward, the waitress serving them, overheard their conversation.
As the firefighters prepared to leave, instead of a receipt, Liz handed them a handwritten note. It read:
“Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you for all that you do, for serving us and for running into the places everyone runs away from. No matter your role, you are courageous, brave, and strong. Thank you for being bold every day.”
This thoughtful gesture deeply moved the firefighters. Hulling was so touched that he began to cry. Liz’s act of kindness showed them their hard work was appreciated, and it meant the world to them.
The firefighters were incredibly grateful, but they didn’t stop there. Young decided to share Liz’s heartfelt note on Facebook, encouraging his friends to visit Route 130 Diner and leave Liz a generous tip if she happened to be their waitress.
The firefighters also learned that Liz had started a GoFundMe campaign to help her wheelchair-bound father. He had been left paralyzed by a brain aneurysm, and Liz was doing everything she could to raise money for a wheelchair-accessible van.
“He needs access to the outside world. He needs to see more than the hospital bed,” Liz wrote in the fundraiser’s description.
Her initial goal was $17,000, but after Hulling and Young shared her story, donations poured in, raising over $86,500.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Liz said, tears of joy streaming down her face. “That’s incredible. What a way to wake up today—I never expected this!”
Liz shared an update on her GoFundMe page, saying, “Our family has witnessed an outpouring of love and support from around the world, and I want to thank each and every one of you beautiful human beings for making this dream possible!”
Reflecting on the incredible experience and her simple act of kindness, Liz told WPVI, “All I did was pay for their breakfast. I didn’t think anything would come of it except that they’d leave with a smile.”
