Inspiring Story: From Garbage Collector to Harvard Law School Graduate

Rehan Staton, a former garbage collector, achieved something amazing: he graduated from Harvard Law School. His journey shows how determination and hard work can lead to success. At a ceremony in Harvard’s campus in Massachusetts, Staton proudly got his Juris Doctorate degree while the crowd cheered for him.

Staton had to work hard to get where he is. He grew up with his brother, raised by their dad who worked multiple jobs to support them. Life was difficult, with not much food and sometimes no electricity. Their house wasn’t in great shape, with holes in the ceilings, mold in the basement, and some areas didn’t even have proper flooring.

Staton had big dreams when he was young. He wanted to be a professional boxer or do well in taekwondo, hoping sports would lift his family out of poverty. But a shoulder injury dashed those dreams. After high school, he had to find a job to support his dad, who had a stroke. So, Staton and his brother had to pause their education.

Luckily, Staton found a job at Bates Trucking and Trash Removal in Maryland. It wasn’t the best job, but it helped him take care of his family. Working with dumpsters gave him some important insights. Some of his coworkers, who had been in jail before, told him not to go down that road and encouraged him to aim for higher education.

Encouraged by his coworkers, Staton went to Bowie State University and later transferred to the University of Maryland. He worked hard and finished his undergraduate studies in 2018. Then, he did really well on the LSAT exam, which is needed for law school. So, he applied to Harvard Law School.

Getting into Harvard is tough, but Staton gave it his all. To his surprise, he got accepted, and a video of his acceptance got a lot of attention online. Actor Tyler Perry offered to pay for Staton’s education, and people donated over $200,000 through GoFundMe to help him out.

Staton knows how important it is to work hard, but he’s also thankful for the help he’s gotten from others. His coworkers encouraged him to go to school, and his boss let him take time off work to study. Plus, his cousin helped him get ready for the LSAT test. All these people believed in him, and it made a big difference in his journey.

Now, Staton wants to give back. He started something called The Reciprocity Effect. Its goal is to bring together staff and students at Harvard, making the community stronger and more connected.

Even though Staton has fulfilled his dream of finishing Harvard Law School, he hasn’t forgotten about what he loved as a kid. He wants to bring together his legal knowledge and his love for sports by leading a pro sports team someday. Staton wants to make sure that, even with a fancy law degree, he stays true to who he is and where he came from.
